Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 25 cm. Adults display very large dorsal and anal fins. Coloration brown with very thin black lines all over body. Juveniles are bright orange with dark chevron-like markings on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species lives in the Pacific Ocean, from Micronesia to Hawaii, south to Pitcairn Island. Lives in seaward rocky and coral reefs, at depths from 5 to 60 meters.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is naturally uncommon but widespread. It is collected in great numbers around Hawaii but no marked declines have been observed.
