Identification
The species can reach up to 35 cm. Bumped forehead, fairly big partly red eyes. Black pectoral fin base. Coloration yellow with dark-edged flank scales, upper back darker, four vertical white lines. Red edges to fins. Head often bluish.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, from Seychelles and Maldives to Fiji, north to south Japan, south to New Caledonia and Australia. Lives in sheltered coral reefs, from 3 to 25 meters deep.

Status : The species has a wide range. It is regularly caught by local fisheries but the data isn’t clear as the species is often confused with M. grandoculis.
