Identification
The species grows to 116 cm for a weight of 32,7 kg. Unmistakable, very large size. Humped back, straight forehead, thick lips. Coloration white with three oblique dark red bands. Red and white fins, elongated dorsal and anal fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from southern Red Sea and east Africa to New Caledonia and Australia, north to southern Japan. Lives in coral and rocky reefs with adjacent sand and gravel flats, to 180 m deep.

Status : The species has a huge range. It is locally vulnerable to overfishing and various management measures have been implemented locally.
