Identification
The species can grow to 50 cm in length. Fairly long snout and elongated body. Adults are pinkish-grey with a dark dot on each flank scales, large black spot on rear half of body. Dark dorsal and tail fins, yellow pelvic and anal fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from south Japan to Indonesia and north Australia, east to Tonga. Probably also occurs in eastern Indian Ocean. Lives in inshore and offshore coral and rocky reefs, from 3 to 80 meters deep.

Status : The species has a huge range. It is locally vulnerable to overfishing although it does occur in many areas with low to no fishing pressure.
