Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 40 cm for a weight of 1.5 kg. Elongated-shaped body with steep forehead. Coloration is silvery grey with a metallic blue sheen on flanks. Longitudinal light blue bands on flanks, blue edge to anal fin.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic ocean from Massachusetts to Bermuda and northern Gulf of Mexico to northern coasts of Cuba. Lives around vegetated and rocky bottoms, mangroves, estuaries, down to 10 m.

Status : The species is very common in parts of its range but could be negatively impacted by water pollution, habitat degradation and overfishing.
