Identification
The species can reach a record length of 70 cm but is more around 35 cm in length. Very thick lips, high profile with conspicuous hump behind head. Coloration silvery grey with dark edges on flank scales. Belly is clearer.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea, Persian gulf and east Africa to Japan, south to Indonesia and northern Australia. Lives in a wide range of habitats, from shallow waters to nearly 400 meters deep.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a huge range but is a main component of fisheries activities, especially in the Persian Gulf. So far, no declines noted.
