Identification
The species grows to 75 cm in length. Humped back, very large head with thick lips. Coloration mostly grey with dark fins, cheeks and back slightly clearer. Clear center on each flank scales. Very large eyes with golden ring on pupil.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and South Africa to Micronesia and Samoa, north to Ryukyu islands, south to Australia. Lives around coastal reefs, sandbanks and estuaries, rarely freshwater, to 25 m.

Status : The species is widespread and common throughout its range. It isn’t known to face any threats at this time. Collection for trade is minimal.
