Identification
The species can grow to 27 cm. Small head, elongated body. First part of dorsal fin elongated (less for adults), last part short and spotted. Coloration made of thick white and black bands. Dorsal, anal and tail fin black with white spots.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean from Bermuda and Florida to the Caribbean Sea and from Yucatan (Mexico) to Brazil. Lives in coral and rocky reefs, from 3 m to 105 meters deep.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is widespread but dependent on coral reefs. It can be threatened by habitat loss, predation from introduced lionfish and overcollection.
