Identification
Adults can grow to 3.5 cm long, rarely more. Elongated body with pointed snout. Round tail fin, body color black with very faint mottling when not in breeding coloration. Yellow-beige band from forehead to end of back and on middle flanks, clearer yellow to white band near belly. When breeding, the bands become broader and much brighter, the tail fin is black with crescent-shaped yellow marking, pectoral fins are elongated and with metallic blue coloration.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in southeast Asia and is endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, being found in the northern half of the state of Selangor and extreme south Perak. It lives in blackwater streams, in peat swamp forests.

Status : The species is only known from three locations, none of them having any pristing jungle left at this time. They still survive in remaining blackwater streams but this habitat is heavily threatened by pollution and creation of agricultural areas (plantations).
