Identification
Adults grow to 14 cm. Orange band edged with violet coming from eye. Male bright pink mottled with red and yellow, pink fins with yellow spots, black area on dorsal fin. Female pink to yellow on upper back, yellow fins with pink dots.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa and Madagascar to Maldives, eastwards to Java (Indonesia). Lives in coral reefs in deep coastal drop-offs, from 20 to 100 meters deep.

Status : The species is widespread and locally common but remains poorly known. The impact of collection for the trade has to be studied.
