Identification
The species can reach up to 35 cm in length. High dorsal profile, big mouth with small barbel under lower lip. Adult coloration is light beige with plain brown saddles on upper back and clear dots on most of body. Fins are plain and spotless.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific areas from South-Africa and Comoros to the Line and Society islands, north to south Japan, south to New Caledonia. Lives in coral reefs around large coral heads on reef slopes with moderate current.

Status : The species is thought to remain safe as it is very rarely collected. Its habitat requirements can be problematic with coral reef destructions.
