Identification
Adults grow to 1,20 meters in length for a weight of 23 kg. Large head with huge mouth, convex forehead. Background color from orange-red to pale grey, olive or brown. Numerous light blue dots scattered on whole body. Blue eye-ring.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the western Pacific Ocean, from south Japan to western Australia, east to Caroline Islands, Fiji and Tonga. Lives in coral reef areas of lagoons and mid-shelf reefs, to 100 m.

Status : The species can be common in parts of its range. It is targeted by fisheries and any decline needs to be monitored and quantified.
