Identification
The species can grow to 1,20 m in length for a weight of 11 kg. Fairly deep body, concave forehead. Black saddle-like spot on tail peduncle. Whole body covered with light edged beige to brown or black spots forming bars and blotches.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Red Sea and east Africa to Samoa and Phoenix islands, north to south Japan, south to north Australia. Lives in lagoons, outer reef slopes in clearwater and coral-rich areas, to 70 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is targeted by fisheries, especially when forming spawning aggregations. These practices are currently unregulated and unsustainable.
