Identification
The species rarely grows above 45 cm but the record length is 90 cm for a weight of 15 kg. Body quite deep. Coloration sky blue (juveniles) to dark violet blue (adults) with bright yellow (not always visible) lips, fins and tail peduncle.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indian Ocean, from Yemen and East Africa to Indonesia. Absent from the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Lives in coral and rocky reefs, seagrass beds, from 10 to 150 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range but is globally rare. It is possibly threatened by pollution and habitat degradation, especially for coral reefs.
