Identification
Adults can reach 50 cm in length. Ground coloration mostly bright red, sometimes with clearer areas forming fading transversal bands on flanks and head. Fins are dark and heavily spotted. Entire body covered with dark-edged blue spots.

Range and habitat
The species is found in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Red Sea to South Africa (absent from Persian and Oman Gulfs), east to the Line Islands. Lives in slear water and exposed areas of coral reefs, down to 150 meters.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a very large range and is globally uncommon. Coral reef destruction and overfishing are growing threats to its survival.
