Identification
The species grows to 35 cm in length. Large eyes and thick lips. Coloration dark red-brown with dark-edged blue spots mostly on the lower half of its body. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins black, white marking on upper side of tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species is found in the western Indian Ocean, in the Red sea, then in the Persian Gulf to the coasts of Pakistan. Lives in patchy open reef areas, from 15 to 55 meters deep, sometimes to 4 m.

Status : The species has two disjunct populations that could be two different species. Overfishing is a problem in the Persian Gulf.
