Identification
The species can reach 30 cm in length. Unmistakable. Forward half of body dark purple red with red barbels and two curving white lines on face, back and flanks. Back half of body white and bright yellow with a black blotch on middle flanks.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Pacific Ocean, from Moluccas and Philippines to Micronesia, north to south Japan, south to Australia. Lives in areas of sandy, rubble and weed substrate near coral reefs, to 100 m.

Status : The species has a wide range and remains common. It is caught for the trade and locally suffers from habitat loss but remains safe at this time.
