Notes : No subspecies known, formerly placed in genus Premnas. Includes A. gibbosus and A. epigrammata for now.
Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 17 cm with males considerably smaller than females. Distinct spines on gill coverts. Unmistakable with its dark red coloration and three vertical bands which are either white or yellow.
Range and habitat
The species occurs from central Indian Ocean to west Pacific Ocean, from India to Thailand, south to Northern Australia. Lives in protected reefs in lagoons, sometimes seaward reefs, down to 16 meters.
