Identification
The species can reach 13 cm in length. Juveniles entirely yellow with horizontal black bands. Adults are yellow-brown to olive-brown with yellow to white dorsal, anal and tail fins. White cheeks and mouth with two diagonal bars on cheeks.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Andaman Sea to Philippines, and south Japan, east to Bali. Populations east of Bali are N. xanthurus. Lives in coral-rich areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, from 2 to 23 m deep.
