Identification
Maximum length is 15.8 cm. Oval-shaped, laterally compressed body. Beige-grey coloration with faint orange stripes and darker areas around head and belly. Red edges on fins. Large black blotch on middle flanks, closer to head.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Madagascar, occurring in the North-west of the Island, in the Betispoka and Mahajamba river basins. Lives in slow flowing rivers and floodplains.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has experienced a dramatic decline because of overfishing, predation by alien species and both habitat loss and fragmentation.
