Identification
The species grows to 24 cm in length. White flanks with broad black band widening at base. Black face with brown forehead and black horn on convex forehead. Dorsal, anal and tail fin yellow, nearby rear of flanks dirty brown-yellow.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa to the Pitcairn group, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in lagoons and outer reefs with prolific coral growth, from 2 to 25 meters deep.

Status : The species is widespread but globally uncommon within its range. Possibly vulnerable to habitat destruction as it is dependent on corals.
