Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 18 cm. High profile. Flank coloration nearly black with a yellow dot on each scales. Light grey to white upper flanks, dorsal fin and band near gill coverts. Black mask with grey snout, edged white-yellow.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western and central Pacific Ocean, from Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan and Philippines to Hawaii and Marquesas islands, to New Caledonia. Lives in coral-rich lagoons and exposed outer reefs, to 30 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range but its dependence on one more and more threatened type of coral could make it highly threatened very soon.
