Identification
This species can reach 18 cm in length. Long snout. Coloration mostly bright yellow (sometimes with light green tinge). Flank scales with dark edges creating a cross-hatched pattern. Black edge on tail and dorsal fins. Wide black band on head.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Sri Lanka to Tuamotu Archipelago, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia and Australia. Lives in coral-rich areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, to 30 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range where it is widespread and globally common. Its dependence on corals has yet to be understood.
