Identification
Adults can reach up to 12 cm in length. Body whitish-grey with vertical rows of brown dots, darker thick vertical bands on flanks. Black and white tail, black forehead spot, yellowish snout, dark orange eye band. Yellow edge on dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the central Pacific Ocean where it is endemic to the Hawaiian islands and Johnston Atoll. Mostly found around rocky reefs with sparse corals, from 5 to 114 meters deep.

Status : The species is very common within its restricted range. Most of its range lies within protected areas.
