Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 15 cm. Laterally compressed body with protruding snout. Unmistakable. Dark brown to black coloration with white spots on each scales. Clear vertical band on flanks. Broad yellow edge on fins.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the Japanese waters and has been found from Sagami Bay to Ryukyu, Izu and Bonin Islands. Lives in shallow rocky shorelines and reefs, in clear water, down to 20 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a very small range but isn’t currently trapped in big numbers. It remains fairly common and faces no known threats.
