Identification
Adults can reach 58 cm in maximum length. Fairly deep body with a rounded back. Thick lips, medium-sized eyes. Coloration dark silvery grey with dirty yellow tinge on lower back. Fins are dusky grey. Vertical black bar on middle of flanks.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and Cortez Sea from central California (USA) to southern tip of Baja California peninsula (Mexico). Lives in coastal waters around rocky reefs and sandy bottoms, to 40 meters deep.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a fairly large range and remains common and adaptable but it is famous for sport-fishing. This activity needs to be monitored.
