Identification
The species grows to 41 cm in length. Adults have black to very dark blue body and fins. Flank scales are rimmed with golden-yellow. Dorsal fin lighter, with yellow filament. Face dark grey-blue with no markings. Yellow eye-ring.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida and Bahamas through Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Islands to north Brazil. Lives in shallow coral reef areas, from 3 to 100 meters deep.

Status : The species has a wide range but is often collected for the aquarium trade. So far this isn’t a threat but some populations in Brazil are declining.
