Identification
The species grows to 25 cm long. Elongated and spotted tail fin. Coloration grey to white with black longitudinal bands. Female has top flank bar thicker and black dorsal fin. Male has thinner bars, yellow forehead and longer tail.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the eastern Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, from Gulf of Thailand and Indonesia to Vanuatu, north to south Japan, south to Australia. Lives in coral reefs near steep drop-offs, reef crests, from 10 to 50 meters deep.
