Identification
The species grows to 18 cm long. Male bluish-white with thin vertical black lines except on cheeks, tail fin with orange spots, black dorsal fin edged yellow. Female grey-white with black spot on forehead and upper back, black edges to tail fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Indian Ocean from Red Sea to South Africa, east to Maldives, Madagascar, Réunion and Mauritius. Lives in outer reef slopes and drop-offs, from 15 to 70 meters deep.
