Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
Adults can reach up to 18 cm in length. Unmistakable. Male is pearly-white with two horizontal yellow bands. Female is white-grey with two broad curved black bands on upper half of back and dorsal fin. Broad blue blotch on lower flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs around archipelagos in the Indo-Pacific area, such as Cocos-Keeling Atoll, Philippines, Palau, Tonga, Guam, Cook and Society Islands. Lives in current-swept outer reefs drop-offs, from 25 m to more than 100 m.

Status : The species’ range seems to be fragmented but the species remains common in the wild and apparently faces no known threats.
