Identification
Adults can grow to 26 cm in length. Unmistakable. Coloration mostly bright yellow with black edges on flank scales. Anal fin mostly black with white base. Small black spot above eyes, bright blue lips. Faint round spot behind gill coverts.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from east Africa to Indonesia, east to Samoa, north to south Japan, south to North Australia. Lives in lagoon and seaward coral reefs, at depths from 3 to 60 meters.

Status : The species is common within its range and suffers from no major threats. Locally declining due to overpredation by introduced lionfish.
