Identification
The species can reach up to 18 cm in length. Body slightly oval in shape. Coloration unmistakable. Lower half clear grey-blue to white, upper half with pearly white spots, broad black band splitting both halves. Black tail and anal fins.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the eastern central Pacific Ocean, only around Hawaii and Johnston Islands. Lives in rocky and coral reefs, often around ledges and caves, from 12 to 183 m.

Status : The species is common within its range and suffers from no major threats. Locally declining due to overpredation by introduced lionfish.
