Identification
Adults can reach up to 32 cm exceptionnally but are more often near 20 cm in length. Coloration darker than most members of its genus. Dark red and white horizontal bands on flanks of nearly equal size with one brighter and broad silvery white band in mid body, running from gill coverts to end of tail peduncle. Dorsal fin clear with broad red edge. Most fins with thick red and thin white edges and with visible yellow tinge.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa, south to Mozambique (but not in the Red Sea), eastwards to Society Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland. It is found in shallow and protected reefs, often in dead reefs areas where it shelters in caves during the day, at depths down to 20 meters.

Status : The species is listed as Least Concern as it has a huge range and seems to be globally safe at this time. No threats are known.
