Identification
The species can reach a length of 8 cm, female bigger than males. Round belly and back, barrel-shaped body. Coloration is translucent beige with black belly mark for females. Males have bright orange tail and steel blue scales on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Central America and is endemic to central Mexico in Rio San Leonel, Rio Tamazula and Rio Grande de Santiago. Lives in fast and slow moving rivers, temporary still water holes.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species used to be very common in its range but droughts, water pollution and disturbance are great threats to its survival.
