Identification
The species grows to 39 cm in length. Yellowish-white belly. Dorsal surface is light brownish-beige with black dots forming mottling and high number of dark-edged white spots on most of body. One single dark blotch on lateral line.
Range and habitat
The species is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from Red Sea, East Africa and Persian gulf to Hawaii, north to South Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in coastal coral reefs, on sandy and muddy bottoms, to 150 meters deep.

Status : This species has a large range and its populations seem to be stable. It is targeted by fisheries in many parts of its range but impact is unknown.
