Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 150 cm for a weight of 90 kg. Slight high profile because of small hump on back. Elongated dark patternless fins. Coloration dark grey with thick black edges to scales, belly lighter grey.
Range and habitat
The species is endemic to India and only occurs in the Western Ghats, in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka). Lives in clear water upland rivers and fast-flowing rivers.

Status : The species has a big but highly fragmented range. The species suffers from pollution, overtrapping and competition by introduced species.
