Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 18 cm. Small filament-like extensions coming from dorsal fin. Coloration usually silvery with green-yellow tinge. Black blotch near tail. Large black blotches edged red on tail. Males much brighter.
Range and habitat
The species is found in southern Asia and is endemic to Peninsular India, being found in rivers in west and east sides of the country. Lives in lowland, middle and upper reaches of rivers, reservoirs and marshes.
