Identification
Adults can reach a record length of 55 cm for a weight of 500 g. Laterally compressed body with flat forehead and blunt snout. Scales silvery yellow strongly shiny. Dark band on gill covert. Dark tail, young specimens have longer fins.

Range and habitat
The species is native to eastern Asia and occurs in many river basins in south China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Taiwan. Lives in midwater areas of large rivers, sometimes flooded forests.

Status : The species, as it is, is likely a species complex. It is heavily impacted by fisheries and by the construction of dams disrupting its migration routes.
