Identification
Maximum body length is 3.5 cm. Small tetra with slightly iridescent silvery scales on flanks. Caudal, anal and pelvic fins are bright red, dorsal fin is long and dull red. Black marking near gill coverts, sometimes not visible. Often mistaken for H. columbianus but this species is much smaller in size and has more red on the fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in south America and is endemic to the locality of Vinces, in south Ecuador. Lives in small forest rivers, slow-moving water with rotting leaves as substrate.

Status : Only known from type locality where it was discovered. It isn’t assessed so far but could be threatened by habitat loss and over collection.
