Identification
Adults can grow to 32 cm in length. Big head with clear eyes and round snout, short but thick white barbels. Juveniles are dark with broad longitudinal yellow-white lines. Adults are light brown with thinner longitudinal white lines.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives around coral reefs in coastal areas, sometimes freshwater, to 60 meters deep.

Status : The species seems to remain abundant so far. Its conservation status still needs to be assessed properly. Classified as Least Concern in the Persian Gulf only.
