Identification
Adults can grow to 54 cm in length but usually smaller. Elongated head with thick elongated lips. Maxillary barbels are never black for this species. Adipose fin with near straight back margin. Coloration spotted and mottled brown.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the northern half of Africa, from Senegal to Chad basins, east to the Nile river and Lake Turkana. Lives in muddy rivers and lake bottoms with submerged and fringing vegetation.

Status : The species has a wide range and remains at least locally common. It may be split into different species and will need reassessment.
