Identification
Juveniles with black area on dorsal and anal fins, fading with age. Adults are uniformly silvery-grey-blue. Can be told from O. bicirrhosum when juvenile by coloration.
Range and habitat
South America, endemic to the Rio Negro river basin. Found in streams, backwaters, large rivers, flooded forests, often near the water surface.

Status : The species seems to be common. It has a large range and can live in a wide variety of habitats. Its status in other parts of South America (Colombia, Venezuela) needs to be studied.
