Identification
The species can reach 35 cm in length but is usually much smaller. Body slightly compressed laterally, round head with huge eyes and bioluminescent organ just below eye. Coloration is brown with black head and fins, white fin edges.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Western Pacific Ocean, from south Japan and Philippines to Tuamoto, south to Australia and Great Barrier Reef. Found around steep dropoffs, usually in rocky areas, near caves, to 400 m.

Status : This species seems to be fairly common around its range despite being collected regularly in some places.
