Identification
Head small and not distinct from body. Whitish-yellow iris, small mouth. Coloration drab brown, more or less dark depending on habitat and stress. Tip of tail is yellowish.
Range and habitat
Indo-Pacific, from Red Sea and east Africa to Marquesas Islands, to south Japan and New Caledonia. Found in mangrove swamps, brackish waters and shallow coral reefs.

Status : The species has a large range but its taxonomy status needs to be studied as multiple species could be involved. Caught for subsistence fishing and for trade but not believed to be threatened.
