Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 40 cm. Very slender cylindrical body with thin and transparent dorsal fin. Coloration is yellowish cream with lots of black dots on whole body and black blotch near head. Big yellow eyes.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific, from Red Sea and East Africa to Society Islands, north to south Japan, south to Australia and New Caledonia. Lives mostly in burrows dug on sandy slopes, from 15 to 50 meters.

Status : The species is thought to be very common in the wild, in suitable habitats. Often collected for aquarium trade.
