Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 3 meters for a weight of 110 kg. Very long cylindrical eel-like body. Long head with big round eyes and very large mouth. Coloration uniformly dark blue-gray to black with clearer belly.
Range and habitat
Eastern Atlantic Ocean, occurring from Norway and Baltic Sea, south to Senegal and Mediterranean Sea. Lives in rocky and sandy bottoms, sometimes near shores, down to 3000 meters.
