Identification
Maximum length is 13 cm. Round body with caudal peduncle present. Radiating lines around eyes. Coloration variable going from orange to dark brown, often mottled with dusty-grey. Dark spot edged with yellow on dorsal fin.
Range and habitat
Indo Pacific, from Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and New Zealand. Also occurs in tropical eastern Atlantic around Azores, Madeira, St Helena and Canary Isl. Benthic species, found in lagoons and seaward reefs, at depths down to 160 meters. Occurs deeper in the Atlantic than in the Indo-Pacific areas.

Status : The species remains fairly common in its very large range. It is often collected for the aquarium trade but this isn’t viewed as a threat for now.
