Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 21 cm. Large newt, females being bigger than males. Flat triangular head. Black head and body with broad longitudinal orange bands on flanks and back. Tail entirely orange. Orange knobs on flanks.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia and is endemic to China, being found in western Guizhou and north-east Yunnan provinces. Lives in montane and hilly grasslands, near ponds and pools from 1500 to 2400 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has a very small and now highly fragmented range. Numbers in the wild are still declining due to loss of habitat and capture for trade.
