Notes : No subspecies known. Two subspecies previously recognized.

Identification
Adults can grow to a length of 11 cm (tail included). The species has a fairly stocky build. Coloration variable, ranging from green to dark brown on back and yellowish on flanks. Black spots found everywhere on body, including belly.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the coastal region of south-central USA, in Texas, south of the San Antonio River, south to Mexican coasts in San Luis Potosi. Lives in quiet stream pools, permanent and temporary ponds in coastal plains.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is in alarming decline because of important habitat fragmentation and destruction. Both subspecies are now highly endangered.
