Identification
Adults can reach up to 12 cm in length, females being bigger and darker than males. Prominent crest above each eyes. Small flattened upturned snout. Skin warty. Coloration brown to yellowish-brown with yellow belly.

Range and habitat
The species only occurs in scattered localities in south and north coasts of Puerto Rico and on Virgin Islands (perhaps extinct there). Lives in semi-arid areas with rocky outcrops and seasonal forests, to 50 meters.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has gone through catastrophic decline in recent times, being extinct in most of its range. Less than 250 mature individuals remain but a captive breeding and reintroduction program has allowed to save the species for the time being.
